IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
The International English Language Testing System is an internationally recognized exam system for determining the English language level. The exam, which started in 1989, is organized by the Cambridge University English Examination Center for Foreigners, British Council and IDP Education.
There are two types of exams: academic and general purpose. The academic exam is available for those who want to study or practice their profession in an English-speaking country. The general purpose exam is valid for non-academic work, internship or immigration applications.
While IELTS is accepted by almost all academic institutions in Australia, UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa, it is also accepted by most institutions in the USA. The exam is mandatory for those applying for immigration to Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
There is no failure in the exam. The exam result is based on a level determination system ranging from 1 (no knowledge) to 9 (expert). The validity period of the exam is two years, and the exam results that have passed two years are considered invalid.
IELTS is the most popular exam in the world for higher education and immigration applications. Every year, around 1.4 million people from 130 different countries apply for the exam.
IELTS Features
The main purpose of the exam is to measure the participant’s English language competence in listening, reading, writing and speaking. After giving an evaluation score between 0 and 9 for each section, your overall evaluation level is determined according to the average of these evaluation grades. In the speaking part, which is an important part of the exam, the examiner chats withthe participant. The examiner takes notes his / her evaluations about the participant. In addition, the entire conversation is recorded for the evaluation purpose.
IELTS Exam Structure
All participants must complete all four sections listed as listening, reading, writing and speaking in order to complete the exam. Although the listening and speaking sections are the same for all participants, the reading and writing sections vary depending on whether the exam is for academic/general purposes.
Listening
The listening section consists of four separate parts. Before each section, participants are given brief information about the section to be listened to. Afterwards, they are given a short time to look at the questions in the exam. In the first three parts, a short break (approximately 30 seconds – 1 minute) is given to allow the participants to read the remaining questions. Each episode is played only once, and it is not possible to be played again.
Reading
The reading section in the academic exam consists of three parts, with an average of 13-14 questions after each text, and it consists of 40 questions in total. Although there are three parts in the general exam, the texts are shorter and simpler.
Writing
In the writing exam, which consists of two parts, firstly, a table/graphic/sketch is asked to be explained, and in the second part, a composition under the chosen title is requested.
Speaking
The speaking section consists of three parts. In the first part of the conversation, the examiner asks the participant about general information, interests, and family members. In the second part, the participant is asked to first think for a minute on a given topic and then talk about the topic for two minutes. In the third part, the examiner asks the participant some relevant questions regarding the topic given in the second part.
Duration
The total test time takes approximately 3 hours:
- Listening: 40 minutes
- Reading: 60 minutes
- Writing: 60 minutes
- Speaking: 10-15 minutes
The first three parts, listening, reading and writing, are always done in this order and without interruption, on the same day and at the same exam centre. The speaking section can be held in another test centre at the will of the exam centre, within seven days after the other exam sections, at a specified time interval.
Evaluation
The IELTS level assessment is between 0 and 9. If the mean ends in 0.25, it is rounded to the upper half number, if it ends with 0 .75, to the upper integer. (For example: 6.25 = 6.5, 6.75 = 6.5, 6.125 = 6.0, 6.75 = 7.0, 6.675 = 7.0)
